Trump’s latest warning to enforce an extra complete levy on Chinese goods has been labeled a “typical example” of US double standards, as stated by the Chinese government.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry further commented that the nation could enact its own unspecified “responsive actions” if the US President carries out his warning, emphasizing that the country was “fearless” of a possible trade conflict.

On Friday, Donald Trump retaliated at Beijing’s move to reinforce its rules for overseas sales of critical elements, charging the Chinese leadership of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the international market “under its control”.

He also threatened to pull out of a scheduled meeting with Beijing’s head of state Xi Jinping, which was expected to take place during a summit in South Korea before the month ends.

Trump’s comments on that day unsettled global markets, with the S&P 500 dropping nearly three percent, marking its steepest fall since last spring.

The president’s words reignited fears of a trade war between the US and China.

Earlier this year, the both nations had reached an agreement to drop triple-digit tariffs on each other’s imports, which had led to concerns of trade halting between the economic powers.

This left, US tariffs on Chinese imports facing an additional thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while US goods entering the Chinese market are subject to a 10% tariff.

Beijing’s recent statements – released by the Ministry of Commerce in the format of official answers to journalist’s questions – reflected language from the height of the recent trade conflict.

They criticised American limits on exports on semiconductors and chips while justifying Beijing’s overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals as “routine measures” to protect state interests and that of every country.

Their representative remarked that for “many years”, the America had “expanded the interpretation” of domestic safety, misused export control measures and “implemented” biased policies against China.

“Using” tariff threats is not the correct approach to deal with China,” the official stated.

“The nation’s view” on a import duty dispute has consistently been consistent: we are not seeking one, but we are unafraid of one.”

Recently, the Chinese government declared it was strengthening overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals and further resources critical for cutting-edge industry.

This move was regarded as a key move, as the country processes about 90% of the global rare earth supply, which are employed in items such as photovoltaic modules and smartphones.

The recent comments from both governments are being interpreted by analysts as a strategy of bolstering negotiating stances prior to future trade talks.

Remains uncertain whether a talks between Trump and President Xi, scheduled at a high-level meeting in the Republic of Korea before month’s end, will take place as planned.
