British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
