Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty
The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
