Two Victims Named in the Providence Campus Incident as Law Enforcement Continue Manhunt for Killer.

Both young individuals who lost their lives in the weekend's violent attack at Brown University had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant carried on following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person of interest in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a gathering on Sunday.

Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also shared sympathies online, stating: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her kin and peers, above all her mom and dad.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the prestigious university, family members said.

The victim's identification was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a tribute.

Details of the Attack

An additional nine individuals were injured in Saturday’s attack in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Authorities said late Sunday that a man aged 24 arrested in a raid at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was released from custody.

“We have a murderer out there,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and go in another, and that is the current situation over the last day or so.”

Community Anxiety

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke renewed concern for our community”.

The assailant opened fire inside a room in the engineering facility on Saturday afternoon, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm handgun, a police source told the media outlet.

Police that searched the lodging recovered a pair of pistols and magazines when the individual was detained, according to reports.

The Wounded Victims

Regarding the nine injured, one pupil was discharged from care, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in grave but unchanging health, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

Further Tributes

Cook was remembered at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only here growing up... but at Brown she was a radiant presence in that particular place as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and peers,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the student's death in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to his relatives, loved ones, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future.”

National Context

The fatal shooting at Brown, the country's seventh most historic college with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in this year, according to records. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
